What is eCipher?
eCipher is an email encryption tool that augments your existing email client. Email messages sent with eCipher are protected against snooping, tampering and unauthorized access.
How does eCipher verify rights?
When you install eCipher, you register your email address with eCipher’s servers. We use this email address when determining access rights. Due to the nature of this security, you must be connected to the Internet in order to view a .safe file.
What happens when I send a .safe file to someone who doesn’t have eCipher?
The recipient of your email must install and activate an eCipher account in order to view the contents of the .safe file. Every email protected by eCipher has a cover letter that provides a download link for eCipher in order to facilitate your usage.
What are the different parts of eCipher?
eCipher includes a Desktop Toolbar that is used to compose, reply, and view encrypted email. It provides a contact manager as well. If you have Outlook installed, you can also install the eCipher Microsoft Outlook® Add-in that allows you to compose and send encyrpted email directly from the Outlook Compose Window.
What are the system requirements for eCipher?
* Windows 2000 SP4, XP and Vista (32bit)
* .Net Framework 2.0
* Pentium III 700Mhz CPU or better
* At least 100 MB free space
* Installation and use of eCipher requires an Internet connection
* Usage of Outlook integration requires Outlook 2000 or newer
Do Ineed to use Outlook in order to use eCipher?
* No. eCipher can be used to secure emails sent with Thunderbird, Gmail, AOL, Yahoo! Plus and many more.

Can I use eCipher without installing the Outlook Add-in?
* Yes. If you use MS outlook, but decide to not install the eCipher “Send Secure” add-in, you can compose and send secure messages directly from your desktop with the eCipher desktop application.

Can I use eCipher to meet HIPAA regulations?
Yes. When you send a .safe file, the information is protected on your system and can only be opened by the intended recipient. This qualifies as a reasonable safeguard as outlined by the HIPAA Privacy Rule. To learn more about HIPAA and eCipher click here.
What is a .safe file?
eCipher encrypted files are given the extension .safe, which is an acronym for Secure Alternative For Email. The .safe files can only be decrypted by authorized recipients.
When I try to open a .safe file, eCipher tells me “You do not have permission to view this file.” Can you reset the password on the file?
ESS cannot open or reset rights on a .safe file. You’ll need to contact the original sender and ask them to resend the information, being certain to send it to the email address you have registered with eCipher.
What kind of protections does eCipher provide?
All email and file attachments sent through eCipher are encrypted. Email messages can be assigned additional protections. These include the ability to: Prevent Forwarding, Prevent Printing, Print Copy, and Prevent Save as…
eCipher can encrypt popular file types including Microsoft Office documents, Adobe PDF and more.
What is the encryption strength eCipher provides?
eCipher email encryption applies to all messages with AES 256 and RSA 2048 bit encryption.
Email Accounts (eCipher Microsoft Outlook® Add-in)
eCipher isn’t automatically adding itself into Outlook. What's wrong?
After installing eCipher, please make sure to close and restart Outlook in order to display the eCipher Outlook Add-in. The eCipher Outlook Add-in displays inside the Compose window.

How do I add my email or webmail account to eCipher?
1. Start eCipher.
2. Click Settings then Accounts.
3. In the Account Window, click Add.
4. The Account Information tab will become active. Enter your webmail account username and password, and then select your webmail provider from the pull-down menu.
5. Click Test Connection to verify you've entered the correct information.
6. Click Save when you are done.
What email and webmail providers does eCipher support?
eCipher has built-in support for:
* aim.com
* aol.com
* Comcast.net
* Gmail.com
* Mac.com
* Yahoo.com*
Further, any email provider that allows Post Office Protocol (POP) access can be manually configured in the Account Window by selecting Other Domains. You can then enter your email providers Domain, SMTP Server and Port information. Your email provider can provide this information.
* Yahoo! Mail provides POP access with Yahoo! Mail Plus. The free version of Yahoo! Mail does not support this type of access. Please see http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com/ for further details.
Contacts
How do I add new Contact Cards to eCipher?
You can quickly send .safe email using eCipher contact cards. To create a contact card, import a vCard file (.vcf) or import a comma-separated value (.csv)* file.
Create a contact card
1. Start eCipher.
2. Click Contacts.
3. In the Contacts window, click the Plus button above the Contacts pane.
4. The Contact Information window displays. Fill in the form and click Save when done.
Import a .vcf file
1. Start eCipher.
2. Drag the .vcf file onto the Contacts button. You can also drag .vcf files into the open Contacts window.
3. The Contact card will automatically be generated
Import a .csv file
1. Start eCipher.
2. Click Contacts
3. In the Contacts window, click Actions. Select Import Contacts->Comma-separated value files for Outlook -.csv.
4. Browse for the .csv file and click OK. The .csv will automatically be imported, and Contact cards will be created for each entry.
