This new law requires that businesses encrypt their customer’s personal data that is sent electronically. eCipher achieves this by protecting business email communications, securely encrypting messages and file attachments.
Nevada Revised Statute 597.970 states that beginning October 1, 2008, all Nevada businesses must encrypt any electronically transmitted personal customer data, with the exception of facsimiles.
NRS 597.970 may severely hamper Nevada businesses, limiting their ability to communicate via email. eCipher, the easy to use email encryption program, allows Nevada businesses to comply with elements of NRS 597.970 related to sending personal customer data via email.

Specifically, NRS 597.970 reads:
A business in this State shall not transfer any personal information of a customer through an electronic transmission other than a facsimile to a person outside of the secure system of the business unless the business uses encryption to ensure the security of electronic transmission.
NRS 597.970 defines personal data as:
“a natural person’s first name or first initial and last name in combination with any one or more of the following data elements, when the name and data elements are not encrypted:
1. Social security number.
2. Driver’s license number or identification card number.
3. Account number, credit card number or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code or password that would permit access to the person’s financial account.”
